Artist Statement
I see myself as a storyteller as much as a painter. I am interested in the narrative and the timing in my paintings is crucial. I depict a moment of tension but it usually takes place right before or after the action so the action is partly unknown to the viewer. I put the viewer in a slightly uncomfortable position of doubt, leaving him entertain different scenarios and possibilities about what happened or why.
I am also interested in the dynamics of that moment: How the subject of the painting is interacting with the surroundings and other subjects I am creating around him/her. This determines the composition with its angles and stares and the color palette.
My subjects are Princes, Madones and Poets. The models I paint share a romantic aesthetic with their noble and delicate features. They hold a strong presence and although their apparent vulnerability. I enjoy to play with them, the dialogue and balance between the artist and the model. I like that they never completely surrender their secrets and spells to the viewer. My models are mostly other artists and embody a certain style of youth bathed in poetry, baroque, glam rock, pop ballads and psychedelia.
Animals are often present in my work. Their unawareness of the artist's eye allows an interesting contrast with the posing model. It creates a fantastic dimension as the animal is part of the plot without necessarily knowing it. In my more recent work, my paintings have been more closely related with religious and historical symbolism. Music and nature are still very much present.
I see my paintings as windows on my modern day fairy tales and Baroque myths for the viewer to peak through and embark on.
